REPLACEMENTS
There used to be a company called Replacements—the go-to place for finding discontinued china patterns. It was where you could track down the exact gravy boat you dropped on Thanksgiving, the one that shattered into a thousand porcelain pieces and, according to my mom (a.k.a. Doreen), broke Great Grandma’s legacy right along with it.
The beauty of a china pattern is its consistency. Every plate, cup, saucer—identical. It’s a pattern, after all. Replace one, and it seamlessly fits among the others.
People, however, are not dishes.
I don’t know about you, but I can look back and see all the times I tried to recreate an experience, a connection, or a relationship—thinking that if I just had the right “ingredients,” I could replicate the magic. I’d check all the boxes: chemistry? check. charm? check. shared interests? check. And yet… something always felt off.
What I failed to see was this: what I bring to the table—my presence, my beliefs, my patterns—matters more than all the “right” ingredients combined.
And can we talk about Adele for a moment? I adore her voice, but when she sang, “Never mind, I’ll find someone like you…”—she did every love-struck heart a serious disservice. Really, Adele? That one didn’t work out for good reason. Why would we want someone like them?
But that’s what we do, isn’t it? We try again with someone similar, hoping this time will be different. And then we’re surprised when it ends the same way it did before.
If I’m honest, the common denominator in all my disappointments…has been me.
I say that not with shame, but with clarity. And if that stings a little for you, I get it. It stung me too. But here’s the truth: if we are the source of the pattern, then we also hold the power to change it.
Unlike china, our patterns are not fixed. They can be seen, understood, and—thankfully—transformed.
So today, I invite you to pause and look at your life. Where might you be repeating a story that no longer serves you? Where are you trying to replace one thing with another, without shifting what you bring to the table?
Starting this month, I’m offering a brand-new program based on the work of Calling in “The One”—designed to help you uncover the deeper patterns in love you’ve been living out, and consciously create something new. Something true. Something that lasts.
